Android M will allows users to move apps data and APKs to microSD card

31 May

For a long time now, android users largely expressed their need to be able to move apps between the internal storage and the microSD card. whereas Google was slightly slow in reacting to what looks to be a general consensus among android users, it’s just like the upcoming android M will finally come with enhanced support for microSD cards.

Android M

The new feature is termed adoptable Storage Devices. though the company did not mention this new feature on the Google I/O stage, references to online document such a feature can be found within the android M developer preview. adoptable Storage Devices will allows the user to move each the app data and the APKs to the external storage, however providing the app developers specifically permits this within the android app’s manifest.

Although Google didn’t integrate the flexibility to move apps to the microSD card in previous android builds, some OEMs added this feature into their implementation of android. With android M, however, it’s like proper microSD card support are going to be built right into the operating system. this can be a part of a larger initiative at Google, as Android M can bake in support for multiple options that device manufacturers previously integrated in their products, like fingerprint reader support, themes or custom quick settings.

The official documentation says that adopted storage devices are going to be encrypted and formatted to behave just like the internal storage. Since the microSD card are going to be encrypted by the phone, alternative devices won’t be able to see the information on the card. One question that arises is however android M can manage the situation during which the user pulls out the microSD card slot. most likely, the app can no longer be functionable till it’s reinstalled on the inner storage or a brand new microSD card that has been adopted by the phone.

In an interesting twist, android M’s adoptable Storage Devices feature will be applicable to external USB sticks. android M can keep company with built-in support for USB OTG, however likelihood is that that you are not attending to keep an USB stick permanently connected to a smartphone or a tablet. On the opposite hand, this might be a most welcome feature for coming android TVs or android game consoles.
